For the last 11 years, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Wisconsin Team Nutrition has held a student chef competition called "Whipping Up Wellness."
Teams of middle and high school students are invited to develop a nutritious, student-friendly recipe featuring local foods that can be incorporated easily into the school food service program.
The top five finalists from the Recipe Contest are invited to prepare their recipe during the Cooking Competition at Madison Area Technical College – Truax Campus on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Dishes will be judged on taste, student appeal, presentation, and creativity. The top five finalists from the Cooking Competition will receive a banner to display at their school and recognition on the Department of Public Instruction website. Qualifying recipes may be included in the eleventh annual student chef cookbook and may be submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for inclusion in the national recipe database.

Last week was Wellness Week at OHS. Wellness Week is meant to be a week-long event that gets students involved in wellness activities during their lunch period and is hosted by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). This year, two members of Collaborative Wellness provided a selfie photo op and stickers and other wellness activities. Officer Peeters provided the students with an opportunity to try on impairment goggles and then complete a maze puzzle. SOS members had students answer trivia questions about wellness. Our nurse, Karen Carley asked students to "Act" on awareness so students played Gestures and had to act out activities. SADD also provided "Free Hug Coupons" for students and staff all week long.

Mrs. Babcock's students recently released their Painted Lady Butterflies. With much excitement and wonder they observed the butterflies change from the larva to the pupa stage and then emerge as adult butterflies. In the classroom students feed them sugar water, oranges, and dandelions. It was good to release them so they can continue the life cycle.
NBA All Star, Tyrese Haliburton, made a surprise visit to his nieces in Kindergarten and 1st grade at H.B. Patch! He read a book to Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Knapp's classes. The kids were excited to have such a positive role model visit.

On May 6th, Prom 2023 was help in the OHS commons. The theme was "Under the Stars."
Special thanks to Art Eichmann for taking photos, to Reimer Jewelers of Oshkosh for donating the queens tiara again, and Angie Schuster for making the beautiful flowers.

OHS Student of the Month for May is Caleb.
Throughout high school, he has been National Honor Society and played soccer, basketball, track and field, and golf.
After graduation Caleb plans on attending UW-La Crosse and majoring in Biology and eventually graduate school to become a physician assistant.
When asked what his plans for the future are, he replied, "In ten years, I hope to have a stable job as a physician assistant. I would like to still live in the area, with a nice house and big yard. I would also like to be married with 3-4 kids. Overall, I want to live happy and have a stress-free life."
Congratulations Caleb!
Students in Mrs. Morse's Advanced Culinary Arts class participated in a Cake Decorating contest as part of their Bake Shop Unit.
Students worked in partnerships to design a cake according to their client's request. "Clients" ranged from a couple getting engaged, a cake for a 5 year old's birthday who likes animals and outdoors, a cake to celebrate Mother's Day and a birthday cake for an 18 year old who enjoys cars and movies. Guess which cake won? (Congrats to Levi and Brena!!)

Local author, and substitute teacher, Bryce Pomplun, came to read his latest book,"Veli's Adventures: The Adventure of the Sleepover" to Miss Kelly's 4k class. He signed the book, and let our class keep it to add to the collection of the others he has written!
Recently, OHS students attended prom. Here is a throw back to the 2009 prom court!
Biology students at OHS got to experience the fun of extracting DNA from strawberries. It was a little thrilling and a little gross (the DNA looks like saliva as it separates).
Strawberries make great lab subjects because they have eight copies of each chromosome and they make the lab smell yummy!
Today is National School Nurse Day!
Congratulations goes out to Levi as he received his first place plaque along with $2500 for winning the Optimist International Essay Contest. On May 6, 2023, Levi read his essay and was honored at the convention in Green Bay. Supporting Levi at this event were his parents Amy and Scott Harper, and his teacher, Tracey Miller.
Congratulations to Emma and Felicity who performed their solos at state solo/ensemble.
Felicity earned a 1 (highest rating) on her flute solo. Emma received a 1 on her music theater solo and a 2 on her classical solo. Bravo!
