Recently, AP Biology students investigated how cells maximize their surface area to volume ratio using agar blocks as model cells. The "cells" were made with a chemical that changes color in response to pH. The students had to creatively modify their model cells to allow for more diffusion/color change.

On November 15, members of the Spanish Club went to a Yolotl Hearts workshop at the Latino Arts Community Center in Milwaukee. They learned about the history of the hearts, starting with the original painting by Pompeo Batoni in 1767, then brought to the new world by Catholic Missionaries. Nowadays, the hearts, commonly called Milagros, or Miracles, are often symbolic of something a person is thankful for or worried about. They are just as commonly used simply as a decoration. Students had the opportunity to paint their own hearts, and they did an outstanding job! Their creativity and artistic ability impressed Jessica, our teacher for the day.
