OUR KIDS. OUR COMMUNITY. OUR FUTURE. REFERENDUM 2024: Like many other Wisconsin districts, the School District of Omro deals with increased student needs and reduced state funding. At the same time, significant investments are needed to address the major facilities challenges, including District-wide safety and security; aging infrastructure; overcrowding at H.B. Patch Elementary; and annual operations and maintenance costs. Today, many Wisconsin school districts are operating under an active referendum. The proposed referendum plan was designed to address our major challenges. Representatives from Omro's Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) and Athletic/Activities Director Jon Tomaszewski had the opportunity to join CESA 6 CEO Ted Neitzke, and student athletes from across the conference, at the first Flyway Sportsmanship Summit. While there, they experienced team-building activities and processed how their leadership can have a positive impact on their school environment. One takeaway was the zero-zero mindset, which emphasizes that no matter if an individual/team/group is winning or losing, the score is zero-zero. When a person/team thinks they have lost, the game is over. When a person/team thinks they have won is when the competition can catch them.

Students in Mrs. Hughes' grade 8 Science class were challenged to suspend one Dixie cup above their paper using 3 other cups and Popsicle sticks. Once they achieved that, they needed to add weights to the suspended cup and remove as many Popsicle sticks as possible. Edyn and Maranda were able to add 25 pennies to their cup using only 8 Popsicle sticks!

6th grade students in Mrs. Boeck's and Mrs. McKittrick's math class developed their communication skills through a series of challenges. One student from each team was tasked with analyzing how 10 blocks were arranged and then going back to their team and trying to describe how to arrange the 10 blocks. Each individual in class had an opportunity to be the person who analyzed a block structure and then described it to their team. Following the activity, students identified communication strategies that supported the activity (hand gestures, word choice, non-verbal communication) that can apply to future activities in and outside of the classroom. It was great to see the collaboration and communication in class!

On Friday the Thirteenth, many Omro Middle School students experienced some extra luck. During first hour, every student received a ticket with a six digit number. Throughout the course of the day, numbers were called over the loudspeaker (and emailed to all students) and those with matching numbers were invited to visit the middle school lunch room to select a prize. Special thanks to the OMS Student Engagement team for organizing this event!

Biology students start the year learning about their own brains. The brain is more likely to remember something if it elicits emotions, includes physical movement/sensations, and involves peer interactions. Students had fun with this memorable activity in which they use their own hand and arm to model a neuron (brain cell).
